AU Oklahoma Leads First Annual InterFaith Day of Prayer & Reflection
On May 6, 2004 more than a hundred Oklahomans demonstrated that we could celebrate our religious diversity. In marked contrast to the “Christian America” pep rally organized by Shirley Dobson’s National Day of Prayer Task Force and held simultaneously inside the Capitol Building, the event organized by the Oklahoma Chapter of AU on the steps to the State Capitol involved presenters from five different faith groups — including an atheist group.
Instead of praying out loud, we demonstrated our civic unity by speaking from our different faith perspectives about our common commitment religious liberty and freedom of conscience. Then we shared a moment of silent prayer and/or reflection.
Both participants and attendees were pleased with the event. Most hope it will become an annual celebration of civic and patriotic unity.
Next year’s event will be organized by the Interfaith Alliance.
